Aiping Yu: The Future of Nano Technology Presentation: Reasearch Interests: Nanomaterials synthesis and processing, Functionalization of carbon nanotube and graphene, Nanomaterials for engineering nanocomposites, Nanomaterials for supercapacitor, Nanomaterials for sensor/actuator, Nanomaterials for solar cell, Water, Nanotechnology Bio: Aiping Yu is a Chemical Engineering Professor, Director of the Carbon Nanomaterials Laboratory for Renewable Energy and Multi-functional Composites, and a researcher in the Waterloo Institute for Nanotechnology at the University of Waterloo. Professor Yu is primarily interested in materials development for energy storage and conversion, photocatylsts, and nano composites. She is an expert in carbon nanotubes and graphene, allowing her to design the proper porosity and polarity of nanomaterials for high energy storage supercapacitors and ultra-strong nanocomposites. Her previous work in the plastics and carbon solutions industries has led her to dedicate her research toward developing nanomaterials for practical applications. Professor Yu’s research group is interested in applying carbon nano-tubes and graphene to a variety of metal oxides and conducting polymers for super-capacitors. In addition, the group studies energy storage mechanisms for new hybrid energy systems. Professor Yu holds 4 granted and applied patents and has published over 40 papers in peer-reviewed journals that include A to Z of Nanotechnology. She is also the co-author of Electrochemical Supercapacitors for Energy Storage and Delivery: Fundamentals and Applications for CRC, as well as the editor-in-chief of the journal Supercapacitor. 10am. To be followed by Live Questions May 23rd. Dave Penny: The Evolution of Fishculverts Presentation: As transportation technology has advanced, largely over the last 200 years, the healthy ecology of creeks and waterways has often been overlooked and damaged. Fortunately Fishculverts continue to evolve to help our Communities correct this as we move towards a sustainable future. Bio: Dave was born in 1949 in London Ontario beside the Thames River. His childhood was spent exploring the Etobicoke Creek, canoeing in Algonquin and skiing in the Blue Mountains. In 1971 he graduated from The University of Waterloo with a degree in Environmental Studies. While at Waterloo he worked collecting field data for researchers who were studying the deteriorated condition of streams and developing restoration techniques. Following graduation he was hired by ARMCO, the World’s largest manufacturer of Highway Construction and Drainage Products to supervise and instruct on the installation of very large Soil Steel Structures (culverts). That same year he married Linda and the two of them went to Europe for a nine month honeymoon on “Five Dollars a Day”. When they returned home Dave was hired full time by ARMCO to promote, teach and sell culverts. This took him all over the World where he worked with and learned from thousands of engineers, contractors and communities. Dave and Linda have three children who were born beside the Ottawa River and six Grandchildren who live on Vancouver Island, Thunder Bay, Guelph and North Bay. Over the last fifty years he has been working in or near water in a number of capacities. He has been part of many projects, innovations and inventions related to stream restoration. Most recently, at Fishculvert.com, he is helping fish overcome barriers in the stream. “Helping to Re-Connect Communities, One Creek at a Time” 10am. To be followed by Live Questions. |
