Jim Brown: Emergency Services in Guelph/Wellington Presentation: Jim will speak about how EMS operates, some of the challenges they face. Jim is sure to have some interesting stories, and how we as seniors can best prepare for the day we might require EMS support. Bio: I have been a paramedic for almost 25 years, 20 of those as an Advanced Care Paramedic. I began my career with Toronto Paramedic Service and worked in many different areas of the city. After 17 years I moved on and began working for Guelph-Wellington Paramedic Service. I worked on the ambulance for several more years and was part of the Service Education Team before becoming a Field Superintendent. I recently began a new role as Acting Commander of Training and Recruitment. I have been a resident of Guelph for 18 years and live here with my Wife and two Daughters. 10am. Ron East: Just Imagine: My Career in Theatre Presentation: Ron will start off with some background on his career in the theatre and then move on to an understanding of how the imagination works as brain function and how we use it to create and invent at every level. Bio: With expertise and experience in both the academic and professional theatre communities on 2 continents; Ron has a career background in the professional theatre, TV and film, including acting, directing, playwriting, dramaturgy, and training. With an MA from the University of Toronto, and a PhD from University of Guelph, his academic interests include: imagination as brain function, and creative practice. Ron has operated a theatre production company and a professional theatre school in Toronto and London, England. Currently writing his second book, Ron recently presented a research paper entitled ‘Altered States’ at Oxford University, and at the National Humanities Congress of Canada. Ron has been chair of a theatre foundation, has served on a provincial regulatory board, has been chair of the Cultural Advisory committee for the City of Guelph, and is currently Chair and an active member of the Guelph chapter of the Council of Canadians, as well as serving on the national board as a regional rep. 10am. Mayor Cam Guthrie: State of the City of Guelph Presentation: Mayor Guthrie will be addressing current issues in Guelph along with his vision and future goals for our community. There will be time for members to address Cam with questions from the floor. Bio: Cam Guthrie was re-elected Mayor of Guelph in 2018, after serving as Mayor from 2014 to 2018 and as a Councillor for Ward 4 from 2010 to 2014. He currently serves as the Chair of Ontario’s Big City Mayors (OBCM), a group of 29 Mayors of cities with 100,000 people or more, who collectively represent 70 per cent of Ontario’s population. In March 2022, he was appointed to the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy (GCoM) Board of Mayors, representing North America. Cam was a licensed insurance broker and local entrepreneur for 16 years before becoming Mayor. An avid community volunteer, Cam has served on the Boards of several local not-for-profit organizations and mentored startups and small business owners through the Business Centre of Guelph-Wellington. He holds a business diploma from Sir Sandford Fleming College. An accomplished drummer, Cam has been a member of local bands, played on several studio recordings, and produced or co-produced several albums. Cam’s roots in Guelph stretch back to 1919, when his great-grandfather founded Guthrie’s Bakery on Quebec Street in downtown Guelph. Cam and his wife Rachel are proud parents of two children, Anakin and Adelaide. 10am. To be followed by Live Questions. |
