Ed Butts: Guelph Stories Presentation: Ed will be speaking about his new book "Guelph Stories" Bio: Ed Butts was born in Toronto, but grew up in Guelph and has always considered it his hometown. He attended the University of Waterloo, and spent eight years teaching at a school in the Dominican Republic. Ed has written more than twenty books for both adults and juvenile readers. They include Simon Girty: Wilderness Warrior, Wrong Side of the Law, The Mad, Bad and Dangerous, and Wartime: The First World War in a Canadian Town. Several of his books have been nominated for awards. Ed has contributed articles to many publications, including the Toronto Star and the Globe & Mail. He writes a monthly column about Guelph history for the Mercury-Tribune. He is also a contributor to Historica, the online Canadian Encyclopedia. Ed lives in Guelph with his daughter and grandson. 10am. To be followed by Live Questions July 18th. David Rowley: The Ontario Dental Railway Presentation: Recollection of adventures of a young boy living with his Parents on the Northern Ontario CNR Dental Rail Car in 1953….or “How to hit a box car with a slingshot” Bio: Born in Weston, Ontario Grew up in Weston, Tecumseh Township (on a farm), and Leaside (part of Toronto) Graduated from Leaside High School, 1962 Attended Toronto Teachers’ College, obtained an Ontario Teaching Certificate 1962 - 1963 Taught Elementary School for 27 years as a classroom teacher with the Scarborough B. Of Ed., and then 8 years as Vice Principal and Principal with the Wellington Board of Education (now the Upper Grand B of Ed.) Obtained a B.A (York Univ.,1969) and a Master of Education M.Ed. (Univ. of Toronto) and post graduate studies with the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE, U of T 1977) Taught school (1969 – 1970) for the Leigh-on-Sea School Authority in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex, England under the Commonwealth Teacher Exchange Programme. (Select teachers from one Commonwealth Country would exchange positions with Teachers from another Commonwealth Country for one year.) One of 4 teachers from Ontario. Met Ann (wife) in England while on Exchange and married in England in the summer of 1972. Lived in Scarborough, Ontario from 1972 to 1990, and moved to the Ponsonby area in 1990 and then into Guelph in 2001. Have two daughters, Allison and Kirstin, and two grand children, Sarah (16) and Tyson (14). Retired from teaching in 1998. Trained as a travel agent in 2000 at Conestoga College, and spent a short time (very short!) teaching Travel and Tourism at Sheridan college. 2002, started a 3 location travel agency with two partners. Closed in 2012 Currently working with a travel host and agency support company to organize and promote travel programs for active and retired members of the Canadian Forces Morale and Welfare Services. 10am.
