Don Johns: Dying With Dignity/MAID Presentation: An updated presentation from a June 2020 talk. Bio: Don Johns is a retired United Church minister living in the Village by the Arboretum with his wife, Carolyn. He served the church in congregations in Saskatchewan, Toronto and Ottawa. Don has been an active member of Dying With Dignity (DWD), a national organization of advocacy and support for those seeking medical assistance in dying (MAID). He has been trained by DWD as a Client Support volunteer and has also taken on assignments of speaking on behalf of DWD and a gentle death. He and his wife are volunteer witnesses for those requesting MAID and have responded to over 30 calls in the Guelph/Kitchener area. On June 4, Don will address the current interest in end of life issues, review the legislative history of MAID and offer suggestions as to how to plan for a gentle death. 10am. To be followed by Live Questions August 15th.
Brian Holstein/Michael Dougherty: Story Telling Presentation: My talk will include the History of the Guelph Guild of Storytellers, along with its several incidents and members of note, concluding with a story that attempts to explain the nature of a storyteller. Bio: Brian Holstein grew up on a dairy farm in NSW, Australia before becoming a teacher. Immigrating to Canada over 60 years ago he continued his profession until retirement. Since then, he discovered that he was a storyteller and has pursued that talent ever since. A member of the Guelph Guild of Storytellers, he founded Tea ‘n’ Tales some 17 years ago and has seen since it grow in popularity. He is also an avid traveller, willing to go off the beaten track, away from the usual tourist routes. Many of his trips have been circuitous routes back to Australia, talking to anyone, formulating tales to share. He combined his passions last fall when he told a local legend in the middle of Lake Issyl-Kul in Kyrgyzstan, along the Silk Road in Central Asia. Brian has also been a community activist, and, as Guelph co-founder Tiger Dunlop, the operatic Edward Johnston, Guelph Rotary founder Alex Stewart and numerous spirits at Woodlawn’s Spirit Walks. a character actor depicting Guelph’s past characters. (NOTE: I hope to do all this with a humorous slant If possible. I would like to use a microphone away from a podium) 10am. To be followed by Live Questions. August 29th. Richard Rivkin: Wandering Through the World's Oceans Bio: This will be a very interesting talk on a very extensive topic. Presentation: Professor Richard Rivkin is a University Research Professor in the Department of Ocean Sciences at Memorial University of Newfoundland. His interests and expertise are broadly interdisciplinary with research experiences in biological oceanography, aquatic and systems ecology, and ocean biogeochemistry. Professor Rivkin research has been fundamental to understanding of how oceanic communities change in response to environmental and climate forcings. During the course of his 45-year academic career, Professor Rivkin has led research expeditions to the Antarctic, Arctic, North Atlantic, North Pacific, the Sargasso, Caribbean, Labrador and, Beaufort Seas.. In addition to basic research programs, he studied invasive species in ballast water, and the effects of shellfish aquaculture and offshore oil production on marine habitats, ecosystem carrying capacity and carbon export, the ecological impact of green tides in China and the use of novel technologies to enhance coastal maraiculture and Blue Carbon ecosystems. The research from these projects and program has been supported by numerous different funding agencies in the United States, Canada, China and France and the result are described in ~160 peer-reviewed papers, and >250 published abstracts and presentations. He has also served on the advisory or steering committees for several national and international oceanographic programs and was recently a co-chair of the ICES/PICES Expert Group on ocean carbon sequestration. He has also held several prestigious international fellowships and awards, including a Poste Rouges Chercheurs associés; Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, Laboratoire d'Oceanographie de Villefranche, France, a Professeur Invite; Universite Pierre & Marie Curie Paris VI, France and a Chinese Academy of Sciences President’s International Fellowship. 10am.
