May 2025 - Live Meetings

May 8th.
Animesh Dutta: Hydrogen From Biomass

Presentation:

Dr. Animesh Dutta will present an engaging talk on how plant-based materials such as crop residues and forestry byproducts can be used to produce clean hydrogen fuel. He will introduce a calcium looping gasification system that he has pioneered since 2007. This process produces both hydrogen and captures carbon dioxide, significantly improving the overall efficiency and environmental performance of the system. The presentation will explain the core concepts in clear terms, share examples from pilot-scale applications, and highlight how this innovation offers a practical path toward cleaner energy and reduced greenhouse gas emissions.

Bio:

Dr. Animesh Dutta is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering and the University Research Leadership Chair at the University of Guelph. He is also Director of the Bio Renewable Innovation Lab. Over his academic career, he has held faculty positions at the Asian Institute of Technology in Thailand and Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia. His research focuses on converting waste resources such as agricultural residues, plastics, and food byproducts into renewable fuels, chemicals, and carbon-based materials. Since 2007, he has led the development of a calcium looping gasification system that produces hydrogen while capturing carbon dioxide. Dr. Dutta has supervised over seventy graduate students, published more than two hundred peer-reviewed articles, and holds a United States patent in reactor design. He is widely recognized for advancing clean energy technologies with practical applications that support global climate goals.
