Ken McGoogan: Defending Democracy in an Age of Dictatorship Presentation: A frank discussion relevant to the times we live in. Bio: Ken McGooogan is a globe-trotting, history-loving storyteller who survived shipwreck off Dar es Salaam, chased the ghost of Jane Lady Franklin from Russell Square to Van Diemen’s Land, and placed a John Rae memorial plaque in the High Arctic. He is an award-winning Canadian author and speaker who recently published his sixteenth book: Searching for Franklin.His previous books on Arctic exploration history – among them Fatal Passage, Lady Franklin’s Revenge, and Dead Reckoning– have won the Pierre Berton Award for history, the UBC medal for Canadian biography, the Canadian Authors’ Association prize for History, and an American Christopher Award for “a work of artistic excellence that affirms the highest values of the human spirit.” Ken is a fellow of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society and the Explorers Club and sails with Adventure Canada as a resource historian. Ron East: Imagination Presentation: A delightful presentation by one of our members Bio: With expertise and experience in both the academic and professional theatre communities on 2 continents; Ron has a career background in the professional theatre, TV and film, including acting, directing, playwriting, dramaturgy, and training. With an MA from the University of Toronto, and a PhD from University of Guelph, his academic interests include: imagination as brain function, and creative practice. Ron has operated a theatre production company and a professional theatre school in Toronto and London, England. Currently writing his second book, Ron recently presented a research paper entitled ‘Altered States’ at Oxford University, and at the National Humanities Congress of Canada. Ron has been chair of a theatre foundation, has served on a provincial regulatory board, has been chair of the Cultural Advisory committee for the City of Guelph, and is currently Chair and an active member of the Guelph chapter of the Council of Canadians, as well as serving on the national board as a regional rep. 10am.
