Kevin Reid: Sustaining Great Lakes Fisheries Presentation: The fisheries of the Laurentian and Great Lakes: Wicked problems with no easy solutions. Methods for sustaining great lakes fisheries, risk assessment and management. Bio: Kevin Reid is a fishery ecologist with 30 years of experience working with and on behalf of small-scale commercial fisheries. Prior to joining Nature Analytics, Kevin worked with the Ontario Commercial Fisheries Association for 17 of those years, first as a stock assessment biologist and later as research scientist to develop solutions for sustainable fisheries management in the Laurentian Great Lakes. Kevin completed a doctorate focused on the assessment and management of risk in social-ecological coupled fisheries systems at the University of Guelph in 2015. He has been involved in Great Lakes fisheries research and management since 1985. A graduate of the Honours Fisheries Science Program at the University of Guelph in 1984, Kevin has worked as a professional fisheries scientist since 1989 when he graduated from Trent University with a M.Sc. degree from the Watershed Ecosystems Graduate Program while studying the rehabilitation of pike spawning habitat. He has extensive experience in DFO Fisheries Act Authorizations, and the application of causal modelling, participatory stock assessment methods, Fisheries Improvement Projects, Marine Stewardship Council Certifications, and structured decision making processes. He also is currently involved in providing scientific support for small-scale and community-led fisheries in the African Great Lakes, including population dynamics, numerical modelling and simulations to evaluate alternative management actions. Based in Guelph, Canada, Kevin is an active dog walker, gardener, and enjoys documentaries. 10am. To be followed by Live Questions. April 24th.
Rabbi Raphi Steiner: Holocaust Presentation: Through the Fires of Hell: My Family’s Story of Survival Through the Holocaust: In this heartfelt presentation, I will take you through my family's history, from the rise of Nazi persecution to the bravery and kindness of those who helped them survive. You will hear about the challenges they faced, the losses they endured, and the strength they found to rebuild their lives. Bio: Rabbi Raphi Steiner co-directs Chabad of Guelph alongside his wife Mussie and their three children, serving the community since 2014. Chabad of Guelph is a Jewish community centre that provides a welcoming space for individuals and families to connect, learn, and grow. The centre offers a range of programs and services, including Shabbat and holiday celebrations, educational classes, youth activities, and social events. Born and raised in Thornhill, Ontario, Rabbi Steiner studied at the Cheder Chabad of Toronto, Michigan Jewish Institute, and Central Lubavitch Yeshiva in Brooklyn, New York. He received his rabbinic ordination from the Central Chabad Rabbinical Court in Israel. Before joining Chabad of Guelph, Rabbi Steiner served as program director and student liaison for the international Student Committee at Lubavitch World Headquarters in Brooklyn, New York. 10am.
