Steven Kraft - The New Central Library Presentation: Update on the new central library The journey towards a new central library has been a 20 year journey. This exciting new facility will be nestled between Wyndham Street and Baker Street in the City’s downtown as part of the Baker District Redevelopment project. It will serve as a community hub and accommodate the current collection and future anticipated growth, program space needs, member seating, staff and support services and public amenities. Significantly, it will be the foundation of the City’s ambition for Downtown Guelph ensuring that it will continue to be the cultural and civic hub and the City and larger region. Bio: Steven joined the Guelph Public Library as its 14th Chief Executive Officer in October 2014. He has been an integral part of the Guelph Public Library’s system for over 35 years, as he previously served as the Children’s Reference Librarian, Manager of Information Services, Director of the Main Library and the Assistant CEO. In his time as CEO, Steven has been busy. He has delivered presentations on various library topics locally and as far away as Whitehorse, Yukon, and Washington, D.C. He is currently engaged in developing and strengthening relationships for the new Central Library with government and local community groups. Among his other accomplishments, Steven completed a full rebranding, launched a new website, and refreshed the library’s design and collections system-wide. He continues to provide access to new technologies and focus on safety within the library. Steven is committed to providing ways for people to explore their world, enrich their lives and connect with their community. Together, we are building an extraordinary public library for ourselves and the next generation. 9:30 Refreshments

Alex Fitzgerald-Black Canada's Eagles over Husky: Canadian Airmen in the Battle of Sicily. Presentation: In the summer of 1943, the United Nations began Operation HUSKY, the invasion of Sicily. The Eagles over HUSKY – the airmen of the Allied air forces – played a crucial role in the assault. Concentrated in four Royal Canadian Air Force squadrons and scattered among dozens of Imperial units, Canadians served throughout the Allied air armada. Over three months, 154 Canadian airmen died in support of the operation. When Canada remembers the Italian Campaign, we often neglect the contributions of airmen like these. What follows is an effort to retrieve the stories of a few Canadian airmen from the relative obscurity that has become the invasion of Sicily. Bio: Alex Fitzgerald-Black has a Master of Arts in Military History from the University of New Brunswick and a Master of Arts in Public History from the University of Western Ontario. He is the Digital Projects Coordinator at the Juno Beach Centre Association, where he is the host of Juno Beach and Beyond: Canada's Second World War Podcast. Alex’s research interests include air power in the Second World War, with a particular focus on the Mediterranean, and Canadian military history. He is the author of Eagles over Husky: The Allied Air Forces and the Sicilian Campaign, 14 May to 17 August 1943. 9:30 Refreshments 9:50 Club Meeting 10:00 Speaker |
