Thurs. August 3rd. - Jane Mitchell - "Grand River Conservation Authority - History"
Cleaning up the Grand River: From Open Sewer to Award Winning River Today people fish, swim and canoe along the Grand River. There is a fine array of flora and fauna. It wasn't always that way. How the Grand River went from an open sewer to an award winning Heritage river today.
Presently the Past-Chair of the Grand River Conservation Authority, Jane was the Chair from 2011 to 2016. As Chair, Jane was a representative on the Lake Erie Source Water Protection Committee and a Director for Conservation Ontario. Jane was GRCA Vice-Chair for four years and a member for the past 14 years. Jane is an elected Regional Councillor for the Region of Waterloo, representing the City of Waterloo. Presently she is a representative on the Region’s Integrated Urban System Groundwater Study, the Residual Waste Master Plan Working Group, Biosolids Master Plan Update, and the Regional Source Water Protection Liaison Committee.
Thurs. August 17th. - Judith Yan - "Musical Adventures"
Judith will share a wide ranging talk about her musical adventures.
Judith Yan is a Canadian conductor, born in Hong Kong. Equally adept at conducting opera, ballet, and symphony, her career has taken her internationally, conducting for major companies in Germany, Italy, Hong Kong, South Korea, New Zealand, and the United States. She is currently the Artistic Director of GUELPH SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA and Music Director and Principal Conductor of OPERA ON THE AVALON. She has held Staff Conductor positions at the SAN FRANCISCO OPERA, the CANADIAN OPERA COMPANY and the NATIONAL BALLET of CANADA.
Judith is fluent in both English and Cantonese.
She was a student of the late Maestro Pierre Hétu.
Thurs. August 31st. - Cam Guthrie - "State of the City Address"
Cam Guthrie was elected Mayor of Guelph in 2014, after serving as a Councillor for Ward 4 from 2010 to 2014.
A licensed insurance broker and local entrepreneur for the past 16 years, Cam has served as a speaker and mentor at the Guelph-Wellington Business Enterprise Centre. He holds a business diploma from Sir Sandford Fleming College. In 2008, the Guelph Mercury named him as one of the city’s top “40 Under 40.”
An avid community volunteer, Cam has served on the Boards of Michael House, the Guelph Neighbourhood Watch Association, and Guelph Crime Stoppers. He is an accomplished drummer, a supporter of the arts, and a loyal Guelph Gryphons and Guelph Storm fan.
Cam’s roots in Guelph stretch back to 1919, when his great-grandfather founded Guthrie’s Bakery on Quebec Street in downtown Guelph.
Cam and his wife Rachel are proud parents of two children.
