The Royal City Men's Club met at Trinity United Church Gymnasium on the above date. There were 36 members and no guests present.
President Len Johnstone rang the ceremonial bell to call the meeting to order at 9:55 a.m. He welcomed members, related a few
interesting historical facts from the past and presented the Joke of the Day - with an invitation for others to volunteer to tell a joke
at future meetings, particularly if they didn't like his joke. (There was a great round of applause following the joke.)
Len advised that the next meeting would be a tour of Mohawk Raceway with one of the riders making a presentation and possibly
a tour of the stables. He asked those planning to attend to sign up on the sheet provided.
Ken Marchant, Activities Committee Chair advised that new members are needed for the Activities Committee, and invited anyone
interested to see him after the meeting. He placed emphasis on anyone with business experience as that sector is not currently
represented.
Ken also invited members who had a story to tell to volunteer to speak at a future meeting - and/or to be a back-up speaker in the
event that a scheduled speaker does not show up or cancels at the last minute.
Gary Luck introduced speaker Hong Lee who spoke about Bonsai.
Hong had brought seven bonsai trees from his collection and set up a very attractive display that provided an interesting backdrop
and props for his presentation. He talked about what is bonsai, the history of bonsai, how to get started, some of the techniques
involved, and the impact the art of bonsai has had on his life. Hong advised that there is an excellent bonsai display at the Montreal
Botanical Gardens and that a display is being set up in Burlington.
His passion for bonsai as an art form and dedication to the plants he works with were key to his excellent presentation. He fielded
questions for almost half an hour, until cut off by the clock and Ken Marchant thanking him on behalf of the RCMC. He had a hand-out
on Bonsai Basics available after the meeting.
President Len Johnstone reminded members that the next meeting would be a tour of the Mohawk Raceway, and Gary Luck advised
that the next Coffee Club meeting would be next Thursday at Tim Hortons on Woodlawn.
Len adjourned the meeting at 11:00 a.m.
