General Meeting ~ May 13th 2010

The Royal City Men's Club met at Trinity United Church Gymnasium on the above date. There were 50 members present. President Tom Beale rang the ceremonial bell at 9:55 a.m. He welcomed everyone to the meeting, observed that there were no guests to introduce, and announced that John and Sally Stoddart were celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. He followed this with a Tommy Cooper joke. John Pawley, Past-president and Chair of the Nominations Committee presented the slate of candidates for election to the Board of Directors at the June 10 AGM. Len Johnstone - President Soren Sondergaard - Vice-president Ron Durst - Treasurer Ken Marchant - Program Chair Gary Repta - member at large Ron Usborne - Membership Chair for one year John noted that the current Treasurer Ralph Shaw had volunteered to provide back-up for Ron in the Treasurer's duties. Tom Beale related some historical facts and reminded members that their membership fees were due. Len Johnstone spoke briefly about the car rally and asked anyone interested to sign up. If there were fewer than 6 or so cars entering the car rally will be delayed to the Fall. Bruce Folkard introduced speaker Tania Framst. Tania spoke about “Cancer in Men over 50”. She made it clear that she is not a doctor and then presented information about the incidence of and risk factors related to lung, colorectal, prostate, skin and testicular cancers. She also displayed the Fecal Occult Blood Test kit for taking stool samples at home. This is a screening test for colon cancer aimed at people over 50 years of age. The kit is available from your primary health care provider. Tania encouraged members to avail themselves of this service and explained how to collect the stool samples. She responded to questions during her presentation and allowed plenty of time at the end for questions. Several members had further conversations with Tania following the meeting. It was obvious that this was a topic of great interest to members. Rob Scouller thanked Tania and presented her with a small gift to express appreciation for her time and effort on behalf of the RCMC. President Beale advised that the AGM was coming up on June 10, and that his term as President would be ending. He then reminded members again that Membership fees were due and adjourned the meeting at 10:50 a.m. Gordon Framst Secretary
