Meeting March 4 2010

General Meeting ~ March 4th 2010

The Royal City Men's Club met at Trinity United Church Gymnasium on the above date. There were 44 members and one guest present.

President Tom Beale rang the ceremonial bell at 9:55 a.m. He welcomed everyone to the meeting, thanked Gary Luck for bringing cookies to go with our coffee and acknowledged guest Larry Hillier. Following his recounting of a few interesting historical facts and a joke supplied by Tom Gordon, President Tom advised members that:

  • Tickets for the Anniversary Luncheon on April 15 are on sale for $20, and
  • Volunteers are needed for the kitchen.

Ron Durst introduced speaker, Dr. Rickey Yada from the University of Guelph, who spoke about Food Issues and the Public.

Dr. Yada touched on a large number of topics relating to food, nutrition, food science, food and agricultural production, and genetics. He suggested we eat food for variety and esthetics, social reasons and for nutrition and health. He noted an historic disconnect between departments of food science and nutrition, society's move to fast foods (with associated behavioural changes), and the health consequences now evident in the form of obesity and related issues such as cardiovascular diseases and Type 2 Diabetes.

The challenge, Dr. Yada suggested, is “to get food that is safe, nutritious, esthetically pleasing, affordable and convenient”. Some of the trends he sees that address this challenge are: a move away from quick fixes; promotion of a holistic approach (moderation, healthy eating and exercise); personalizing nutrition; and a melding of agriculture, food science and technology, nutrition, industry, government and the consumer.

Dr. Yada fielded questions for about 20 minutes before time was called and Rob Scouller thanked him for his presentation and gave him a small token of appreciation from the RCMC.
Note: Dr. Yada volunteered to provide an electronic copy of his presentation to the Club for distribution to any members who want a copy.

Tom Beale advised that the next meeting will be in two weeks, March 18, with Sean Fox, Assistant Director of the University of Guelph Arboretum speaking about Elm Tree Recovery. He adjourned the meeting at 11:00 a.m.
